I'm analyzing American Idiot by Green Day. Today's blog is co-authored by none other than my sister, Ari. She is an expert on all that is Green Day and she hates all the music that I like, so I decided to blog about something that she likes, for once. I admit that Green Day is far from my style of music but most of it sounds pretty decent. To start off, each song tells part of a story, and the album is the whole story. If you listen closely, each song never really ends because each ending note is the beginning of then next song. They are tied together. This CD is about the idiocy and hypocrisy of America. People are seeing America for what it really is--the pressure to be something you're not or else to be excluded from society. The songs bring together all the "outcasts" of society, or the people who just didn't seem to fit in stereotypical America.
1. American Idiot
This song is about American's idiocy and their obsession with the media. The media is trying to control everything we do. I'm not used to so much criticism in one song but it has a good rock beat.
"Don't wanna be an American idiot.
Don't want a nation under the new mania.
And can you hear the sound of hysteria?
The subliminal mindf--- America.
Welcome to a new kind of tension.
All across the alien nation.
Everything isn't meant to be okay.
Television dreams of tomorrow.
We're not the ones who're meant to follow.
Well that's enough to argue."
2. Jesus of Suburbia
This song is split into 5 parts. (Jesus of Suburbia, City of the Da**ed, I Don't Care, Dearly Beloved, Tales of a Broken Home). Each part tells about the hypocrisy and lies found in religion today. There are some religions out there, nothing in specific, that caters to the people. The people hear what they want to hear. In Ari's words, "It's not really following Jesus. 'Jesus of Suburbia' shows how people make their 'own' Jesus, or religion, to fit what they need while they judge others."
"I'm the son of rage and love
The Jesus of suburbia
From the bible of none of the above
On a steady diet of Soda pop and Ritalin
No one ever died for my sins in hell
As far as I can tell
At least the ones I got away with
But there's nothing wrong with me
This is how I'm supposed to be
In a land of make believe
That don't believe in me"
3. Holiday
This song, according to lead singer Billie Joe, is not anti-American, but anti-war. The message at the end is trying to get Americans to wake up and realize that there is so much injustice in the world, that war is not always the answer. The song makes references to President Bush, Nazi Germany, and France's refusal to support the US in the Iraq war. I had heard this song before (since Ari is such a Green Day fanatic) but I had no idea what it was really about. I'm glad that I was able to look deeper into the songs and find the real meaning.
"Hear the sound of the falling rain
Coming down like an Armageddon flame
The shame, the ones who died without a name
Hear the dogs howling out of key
To a hymn called Faith and Misery
And bleed, the company lost the war today!
I beg to dream and differ from the hollow lies
This is the dawning of the rest of our lives on Holiday!
4. Boulevard of Broken Dreams
This song is a bit too depressing for me. It's about a guy who walks alone on an unfamiliar road. He's not sure where he is, but he walks alone. He wants someone to walk with him so he won't be so lonely, but no one is around.
"I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's home to me and I walk alone
I walk this empty street
On the Blvd. of broken dreams
Where the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone"
5. Are We the Waiting?
This is a kind of continuation of Jesus of Suburbia. Everyone is waiting for something to happen, but no one is really doing anything about it. We all have to wake up and make our future.
"Starry nights city lights coming down over me
Skyscrapers and stargazers in my head
Are we we are, are we we are the waiting unknown
This dirty town was burning down in my dreams
Lost and found city bound in my dreams
And screaming are we we are, are we we are the waiting
And screaming are we we are, are we we are the waiting"
6. St. Jimmy
I had to listen to this song a few times to grasp the meaning of this song. Jesus of Suburbia is tired of where he is living and leaves everything behind. He goes to the city and meets St. Jimmy, who is a bad influence on him. St. Jimmy loves all kinds of crime and is always getting into trouble. I've also heard different interpretations of this song. Another possible meaning is that Jesus of Suburbia and St. Jimmy are the good and bad sides of a person.
"St. Jimmy's comin' down across the alleyway
Up on the boulevard like a zip gun on parade
Light of a silhouette, he's insubordinate
Coming at you on the count of 1,2,1,2,3,4!
My name is Jimmy and you better not wear it out
Suicide commando that your momma talked about
King of the forty thieves, and I'm here to represent
That needle in the vein of the establishment
I'm the patron saint of the denial
With an angel face and a taste for suicidal"
7. Give Me Novocaine

7. Give Me Novocaine
The story continues, and Jimmy has introduced Jesus of Suburbia to drugs as a way of escaping everything. They describe the sensation it gives them, and they don't want to deal with the pain of life anymore. It's not my kind of song at all, but I promised Ari that I would give this blog some variety.
"Take away the sensation inside
Bitter sweet migraine in my head
It's like a throbbing toothache of the mind
I can't take this feeling anymore
Drain the pressure from the swelling,
The sensations overwhelming,
Give me a kiss goodnight and everything will be alright
Tell me that I won't feel a thing
So give me Novocaine"
8. She's a Rebel
Once again, I have found so many interpretations of this song. But the one that makes the most sense is that the "she" in the song represents America. We are the rebels and the saints, and we represent the country. The whole world is affected by what America does.
"She's a rebel, she's a saint
She's salt of the earth and she's dangerous
She's a rebel, vigilante
Missing link on the brink of destruction
From Chicago to Toronto
She's the one hat they call old whatshername
She's the symbol of resistance
And she's holding on my heart like a hand grenade"
9. Extraordinary Girl
The girl that Jimmy/JOS has fallen in love with, Whatshername, is extraordinary in his eyes. She's so special that she's from out of this world, an angel. But she doesn't feel wanted or loved. She feels so alone and has low self-esteem. Jimmy hates seeing her like this. He wants to get to know her more to help her with her problems, but he doesn't have the courage to speak up.
"She's an extraordinary girl in an ordinary world
And she can't seem to get away
He lacks the courage in his mind
Like a child left behind, like a pet left in the rain
She's all alone again, wiping the tears from her eyes
Some days he feels like dying
She gets so sick of crying."
10. Letterbomb
Whatshername is sick of Jimmy/JOS's behavior and decides to send him a letter. She says that he is not the Jesus of Suburbia that he says he is and that he should stop pretending. The "letter bomb" is her way of breaking up with him.

"Nobody likes you, everyone left you...
They're all out without you, having fun...
(Dear J,)
Where have all the b******s gone?
The underbelly stacks up ten high
The dummy failed the crash test
Now collecting unemployment checks
You're a flunkie only along for the ride"
11. Wake Me Up When September Ends
This is Ari's all time favorite song, so this is the one that I am familiar with the most. She puts it on repeat dozens of times in a row (no joke) and she never gets tired of it. Me on the other hand....well that's another story. The lead singer Billie Joe wrote this about his father's death years ago, which happened to be in September. He wants to get through the month so it will not bring back such painful memories. This song also could be about the 9/11 terrorist attacks that happened a few years ago, since it was so tragic and a definite point in time.
"Summer has come and passed
The innocent can never last
Wake me up when September ends
Like my fathers come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast
Wake me up when September ends
Here comes the rain again
Falling from the stars
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are
As my memory rests
But never forgets what I lost
Wake me up when September ends"

12. Homecoming
This song also has 5 parts to it. The mini-songs are called The Death of St. Jimmy, East 12th St., Nobody Likes You, Rock n Roll Girlfriend, and Comin' Home Again. In the first part, Jimmy commits suicide. In Part 2, JOS has a very quiet life, now that Jimmy is gone. Part 3 is reminiscent of Whatsername's breakup hate letter in Letterbomb. Rock n Roll Girlfriend talks about a rock and roll lifestyle, but I'm not sure what is its significance to the whole song. In Coming Home Again, JOS does just that and returns to the town he came from.
"My heart is beating from me
I am standing all alone
Please call me only
If you are coming home
Waste another year flies by
Waste a night or two
You taught me how to live
In the streets of shame
Where you've lost your dreams in the rain
There's no signs of hope
The stems and seeds of the last of the dope
There's a glow of light
The St. Jimmy is the spark in the night
Bearing gifts and trust
A fixture in the city of lust"

13. Whatsername
JOS runs into Whatsername and all the memories of her keep coming back to him. But she doesn't want to be with him any longer, so he must try to forget her as much as possible.
"Thought I ran onto you down on the street
Then it turned out only to be a dream
I made a point to burn all of the photographs
She went away and took a different path
I remember the face
But I cant recall the name
Now I wonder how whatsername has been"
