The next album of discussion is Fearless by Taylor Swift. I am a HUGE fan of hers and I think her music is amazing. She writes all of her own songs and she writes from the heart. I can relate to so much of her music it always cheers me up when I just need good music to listen to.
1. Fearless
Taylor describes this song as the "perfect first date I've never had". She is totally in love with a guy and she would dance in the rain in her best dress just for him. She loves driving with him and she wishes that the moment would last forever. I would love to be in her shoes. =)
"And I don't know how
It gets better than this
You take my hand
And drag me head first
Fearless
And I don't know why
But with you, I'd dance
In a storm in my best dress
Fearless"
2. Fifteen
Taylor sings about what it is like to be fifteen years old. It could have been her past memories that she's talking about, but I'm not sure. The song is about how innocent fifteen year olds can be, just starting out in high school and trying to get boys' attention. They look for love, but they are too naive to realize that high school boys are not worth it and they will just break hearts. They learn about love the hard way and it made me sad when Taylor mentions that her friend "gave everything to a boy and he changed his mind". It's really awful that some guys can do that and just don't care. I can totally relate to this song, because I was a lot like this when I was 15. I wish that I could have realized all these things then that I do now, because looking back, I was pretty stupid.
"You take a deep breath and you walk through the doors
It’s the morning of your very first day
You say hi to your friends you ain’t seen in a while
Try and stay out of everybody’s way
Its your freshman year and you’re gonna be here
for the next four years in this town
hoping one of those senior boys will wink at you and say
You know I haven’t seen you around, before
Cause when you’re fifteen and somebody tells you they love you
You’re gonna believe them
And when you’re fifteen, feeling like there nothing to figure out
Well, count to ten, take it in
This is life before you know who you’re gonna be at fifteen"
3. Love Story
BEST. SONG. EVER. The video is set in Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet times, and everyone is elegantly dressed. Taylor tells the story of a couple in love, but her father doesn't approve of them. She just wants Romeo to take her away from here so she can be with him forever. But he leaves her and she grows tired of waiting and wonders if he will ever come back. He eventually returns with a ring and tells her that her father gave them permission. I'm the biggest hopeless romantic on the planet, and this song always gets my hopes up that there's actually decent guys out there.
"We were both young when I first saw you
I close my eyes and the flashback starts
I'm standing there on a balcony in summer air
See the lights, see the party, the ballgowns
See you make your way through the crowd and say hello
Little did I know
That you were Romeo, you were throwing pebbles
And my daddy said, "Stay away from Juliet,"
And I was crying on the staircase
Begging you, "Please don't go,"
And I said
Romeo, take me somewhere we can be alone
I'll be waiting, all there's left to do is run
You'll be the prince, and I'll be the princess
It's a love story, baby, just say yes"
4. Hey Stephen
This song is about Stephen Barker Liles of the group Love and Theft, that opened up for Taylor on her tour. She has a crush on him and wants him to give her a chance. She can't help the way she feels about him and he looks like an angel. She admits that there are many other beautiful girls out there but "would they write a song for you?" haha I love that part =D
"Hey Stephen, I know looks can be deceivin'
But I know I saw a light in you
And as we walked we were talking
I didn't say half the things I wanted to
Of all the girls tossing rocks at your window
I'll be the one waiting there even when it's cold
Hey Stephen, boy you might have me believin'
I don't always have to be alone
Cause I can't help it if you look like an angel
Can't help it if I wanna kiss you in the rain so
Come feel this magic I've been feeling since I met you
Can't help it if there's no one else
I can't help myself"
5. White Horse
This song is for all the girls out there who are waiting for that perfect guy. The knight in shining armor who is on a white horse, coming to sweep us all away. She really wants her guy to be perfect, but he treats her like dirt and is far from the Prince Charming that she wants. It's sad but she realizes that she's not a princess and (unfortunately) life isn't a fairy tale. She is tired of waiting for him to come with his "white horse" and is done with him.
"Say you're sorry
That face of an angel
Comes out just when you need it to
As I paced back and forth all this time
'Cause I honestly believed in you
Holding on
The days drag on
Stupid girl
I should have known
I should have known
That I'm not a princess
This ain't a fairy tale
I'm not the one you'll sweep off her feet
Lead her up the stairwell
This ain't Hollywood
This is a small town
I was a dreamer
Before you went and let me down
Now it's too late for you
And your white horse
To come around"
6. You Belong With Me
This song is a lot like Teardrops on My Guitar, on her previous album. It's about a guy who has a girlfriend already, but Taylor really wants to be with him. She knows she's not as pretty as her ("She wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts") but wants him to give her a chance to be with him. I totally feel for Taylor, since I've been in this situation before and hated it.
"You’re on the phone with your girlfriend she’s upset.
Shes going off about something that you said
‘Cause she doesn’t get your humor like I do
I’m in my room it’s a typical Tuesday night
I’m listening to the kind of music she doesn’t like
And she’ll never know your story like I do
But she wears short skirts, I wear T-shirts
She’s cheer captain and I’m on the bleachers
Dreaming about the day
When you wake up and find
What you’re, looking for has been here the whole time
If you could see that I’m the one who understands you
Been here all along so why can’t you see, you
You belong with me
You belong with me"
7. Breathe
This song is about a breakup. Taylor knows that it's not easy to break it off with someone that she loved, but it was all too much for her. She doesn't want to see anyone hurt, but she just wants to be free. Her harmonies with Colbie Caillat are really pretty. =)
"I see your face in my mind as I drive away
'Cause none of us thought
It was gonna end that way
People are people
And sometimes we change our minds
But it's killing me to see you go
After all this time
Music starts playin'
Like the end of a sad movie
It's the kind of ending
You don't really wanna see
'Cause it's tragedy
And it'll only bring you down
Now I don't know what to be
Without you around
And we know it's never simple
Never easy
Never a clean break
No one here to save me
You're the only thing I know
Like the back of my hand
And I can't breathe without you
But I have to breathe without you
But I have to"
8. Tell Me Why
This song is about a guy who tells a girl that he loves her, but he is just messing around. She believes that he really does love her, but he treats her so awfully all the rest of the time that she gives up on him.
"I took a chance, I took a shot
And you might think i'm bulletproof, but i'm not
You took a swing, I took it hard
And down here from the ground I see who you are
I'm sick and tired of your attitude
I'm feeling like I don't know you
You tell me that you love me then you cut me down
And I need you like a heartbeat
But you know you got a mean streak
Makes me run for cover when you're around
And here's to you and your temper
Yes, I remember what you said last night
And I know that you see what you're doing to me
Tell me why.."
9. You're Not Sorry
This song is kind of like Tell Me Why. The guy doesn't treat the girl like he should, and she is tired of it. He apologizes over and over again, but he doesn't change his actions. She tells him that he is not sorry and apologies don't mean anything.
"All this time I was wasting
Hoping you would come around
I've been given out chances
Every time and all you do
Is let me down
And it's taken me this long
Baby but I figured you out
And you're thinking
We'll be fine again
But not this time around
You don't have to call, anymore
I wont pick up the phone
This is the last straw
Don't want to hurt anymore
And you can say that you're sorry
But I don't believe you baby
Like I did before
You're not sorry
No no no no"
10. The Way I Loved You
Taylor has the perfect boyfriend. He is kind, courteous, charming, and cares for her. All her single friends are jealous and her parents adore him. The problem: he's so perfect it's boring. She tries to be happy with him but she misses her ex-boyfriend. He was far from perfect, and half the time they were fighting. But she misses the way she felt about him, and doesn't have that with her current boyfriend.
"He is sensible and so incredible
And all my single friends are jealous
He says everything I need to hear and it's like
I couldn't ask for anything better
He opens up my door and I get into his car
And he says you look beautiful tonight
And I feel perfectly fine
But I miss screaming and fighting and kissing in the rain
And it's 2am and I'm cursing your name
You're so in love that you act insane
And that's the way I loved you
Breakin' down and coming undone
It's a roller coaster kinda rush
And I never knew I could feel that much
And that's the way I loved you"
11. Forever and Always
I could go on and on about this song. Taylor wrote this about the infamous Joe Jonas. They were together for a few months, and then he broke up with her over a 27-second PHONE CALL. I'm a huge Joe fan but what kind of person breaks up with his girlfriend over the phone? That takes a lot of nerve. And then he just goes out with Camilla Belle a week later. He doesn't care about how that makes her feel. This song is asking why he ended with her so suddenly (besides the obvious reason...Camilla). She remembers back to the time when he said "forever and always" but he didn't mean it and he left her heartbroken.
"Once upon a time I believe it was a Tuesday when I caught your eye
We caught onto something, I hold on to the night
You looked me in the eye and told me you loved me
Were you just kidding cause it seems to me
This thing is breaking down we almost never speak
I don’t feel welcome anymore, baby what happened please tell me
Cause one second it was perfect and now you’re half way out the door
And I stare at the phone and he still hasn’t called
And you feel so low you can’t feel nothin at all
And you flash back to when he said forever and always
And it rains in your bedroom everything is wrong
It rains when you’re here and it rains when you’re gone
Cause I was there when you said forever and always
You didn't mean it baby"
12. The Best Day
This song is sooo sweet! =) Taylor wrote this about her mother. She has always been there for her and has gotten her through hard times. Taylor has had "the best day with you today". It's a really catchy song and I love it.
"Im five years old
Its getting cold out, got my big coat on
I hear your laugh and look up smiling at you
I run and run, past the pumpkin patch, and the tractor rides
Look now, the sky is gold
I hug your legs and fall asleep on the way home
I dont know why all the trees change in the fall
I know youre not scared of anything at all
Dont know if Snow Whites house is near or far away
But I know I had the best day with you today"
13. Change
This is about giving strength to someone that needs it. People have trials all the time, and sometimes some are so bad that they just give up hope. We all need someone to lift us up when we're sad and to just give us that extra push. It's a great inspirational song. =D
"And it's a sad picture
The final blow hits you
Somebody else gets
What you wanted again
You know it's all the same
Another time and place
Repeating history
And you're getting sick of it
But I believe in whatever you do
And I'll do anything to see it through
Because these things will change
Can you feel it now?
These walls that they put up
To hold us back
Will fall down
It's a revolution
The time will come for us to finally win
We'll sing hallelujah
We'll sing hallelujah, oh"
Taylor Swift is a great singer/songwriter and has done an amazing job on this album. Even if you're not a huge country fan, you should definitely check it out!
